Round 2 V the Heritage at Latrobe Golf Club
Green Acres wins 6 – 3
With two late withdrawals, we again had to call on the depth of our squad to overcome a solid Heritage outfit. Into the team came Roger Schmidt (Rogers’s first game, too) for Graeme Harris and Steve Pryor for yours truly. One thing I have learnt over the past four years at the helm of this great squad is that eliminating the contenders throughout the season is as important as winning. Beating The Heritage leaves Kew as the only other undefeated team this early in the season.
Latrobe was in excellent condition, as is a true test of golf around a tight layout not dissimilar to Green Acres. The fairways were lush, and greens were challenging to read the pace and line. We had some great wins, with John Vidovic, George Zhang, Mike Wood, Rodney Andersen, Cam MacSween and Steve Pryor remaining undefeated in our first two matches.
We also welcomed Bryan Harper and Gary Seymour back into the team, and their experience proved invaluable in delivering a win and a hard-fought half, respectively.
Individual results were as follows:
- John Vidovic won 2&1
- George Zhang all square
- Gary Seymour all square
- Bryan Harper won 4&2
- Mike Wood won 3&2
- Brian Wasley lost 3&1
- Rodney Anderson won 4&3
- Roger Schmidt lost 3&1
- Cam MacSween & Steve Pryor won 1 up
In walking (more like crawling) around all the matches, I got to see some excellent golf, but none more impressive than the 4B team of Cam and Steve. It was a close contest all day, and on 17, Cam rolled in a 40-footer to halve the hole, and on 18, Steve holed a clutch 15-footer for birdie to win the match and set the scene for the rest of our matches. Our 4B team has remained undefeated for the past three seasons – a remarkable achievement considering the quality of the opposition. Brian Wasley fought hard all day and showed some glimpses of his brilliance on the back 9 to stay alive in the contest and show us that his best is not too far away.
Thank you to all the caddies and supporters who ventured across the river. Their support plays a significant role in our performance, and we all love having GA members follow us around as we compete.
Our next match is on Friday, 9 February, at Gardiners Run. Gardiners Run host the final this year, so we view this match as a critical contest on our journey to payback… We play Heidelburg at 11.15 and once again have the opportunity to eliminate one of the contenders. They, too, will be after some redemption after lowering their colours to Kew, and we will need to do our best to hold them out. They are a very proud club and rarely lose 2 in a row.
I look forward to seeing you all at Gardiner’s Run.
