Course flood update – Day 3
Dear Members,
Although we are not able to get out on course, the news is far better today than Tuesday. The Yarra River has subsided and there is no longer any water coming onto the course. The high points of the course have all drained, and our focus is now clearing the remaining water to allow the course to dry out so we can perform the next stage in our recovery.
Several large amounts of water still exist, such as holes 3, 4, 14, 15 and 16, but pumps and outlet valves are working overtime to remove the water as fast as we can. We hope all water can be removed from the course by the weekend.
As I mentioned above, the next stage of recovery will be to dry out the areas of the course so that the silt layers crust over, which will allow us to break up the surface and remove the spoil to aerate the turf and the top layer of the subsurface. This is a time-consuming job but a vital task in the recovery of the course.
The pictures below show how well the course is recovering; however, they also show the sludge and silt deposits left behind.
At this stage, it is still too early to suggest when we will reopen the course; however, it is highly unlikely that we will reopen next week, but we will be working diligently and as quickly as we can to have you back on the course as soon as possible.
Keep an eye out for further updates tomorrow and Monday.
Click on the link below, which shows a flyover video of the surrounding areas of the billabong on holes 3 and 7. James Stewart – Course Superintendent, details what the video shows and talks about the process of removing the spoil in the next stage of recovery.
