Super Saturday – Women’s and Men’s Match Play Championship Finals

Continuing the beautiful early spring weather we are having, Melbourne turned on a warm but windy Saturday for the final of the Women’s & Men’s Matchplay Championships.

Playing together in the same group, it was Deb Guilmartin vs Julie Fisher, and Jack Allan vs Robbie Virgato. Around 40 enthusiastic members and friends came out to watch some great golf.

In the Women’s final it was Deb who started the fastest getting to an early 3up lead through 4 holes. Going through the turn Julie had pegged it back to 2 up.

Potentially the shot of the day was Deb’s brilliant tee shot into the wind to the back hole location on 11 to 6 feet. But still fighting Julie would come back to win the 12th and 14th holes.

It felt Deb always had the answers, a clutch birdie on the 15th made it almost impossible for Julie to go 3 up with 3 to go.

In the end it was a 4 and 2 victory for Deb Guilmartin winning her first Match Play Championship.

Congratulations Deb!

In the Men’s final, Robbie Virgato got off to a nervy start on the 1st and ended up being 2 down through 2. On the 3rd Jack would blast a drive 325m only to have Robbie answer with the halving birdie!

Through the turn Jack was 3 up after he made a bit of a meal of the 9th, the guys traded terrific approach shots into the 10th to 8 feet each! Some great golf was being displayed.

Robbie kept on trying, after a 2 putt birdie on the 14th by Jack to go 4 up with 4 to play, he made a great 20 foot downhill par putt on 15 to stay in it. Jack just held him off enough to end up also winning 4 and 2.

Well Done Jack, your 3rd Match Play Championship!
