History

As the game of golf evolved, it became a popular pastime among both nobility and common folk. The early golf balls, known as ‘featheries,’ were handcrafted from leather and filled with feathers, making them a prized possession in the 17th and 18th centuries. However, with the introduction of the gutta-percha ball in the mid-19th century, golf became more accessible to a broader audience.

The 19th century marked a significant turning point as golf expanded beyond Scotland’s borders. The first golf course outside of Scotland, Royal Blackheath, was established in England, and by the late 1800s, the game had reached the United States, with the formation of the United States Golf Association (USGA) in 1894.

The 20th century saw golf’s transformation into a global phenomenon, with legendary players like Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, and Jack Nicklaus elevating the sport to new heights. Major tournaments such as The Masters, The Open Championship, and the U.S. Open became iconic events, drawing players and enthusiasts from around the world. Advances in technology, from metal clubs to high-performance golf balls, revolutionised the game, making it faster, more competitive, and more enjoyable.

Today, golf continues to be a sport that honours its rich history while embracing modern innovations, with courses and clubs that maintain the spirit of the game, welcoming players of all ages and skill levels.
